Overview

Detective Roger Colby thought he ended serial killer Morgan Laird's murderous spree 28 years ago when Laird was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. But Colby soon finds out that nothing is certain in today's ever-changing society. The wheelchair bound criminal has been released from prison and granted parole. But is it coincidence that a new series of homicides has suddenly begun, identically mirroring Laird's brutal series of murders from the past? As Colby reluctantly joins a federal task force investigating these new crimes, he begins to uncover a new and sinister plot so unthinkable that it virtually defies belief. When Morgan Laird's DNA is recovered from the scene of one of the recent murders, Colby realizes that the unthinkable has suddenly become reality. Shunned by the task force and without support, Colby knows he must trace his new blood tail to its source and bring these new and brutal crimes to a stop, regardless of the consequences.

Reviews

"Ron Shade is a great addition to the world of private eyes. His life and his first case show the depth and texture of a mature writer. His creator, a long-time Chicago area police officer, brings the same inside knowledge of police investigations and politics readers get from Joseph Wambaugh."  —Sara Paretsky on A Killing Frost

"Beware reader, Michael A. Black's newest thriller will have you by the throat by the time you've finished the second page. From there it only accelerates. Don't say you weren't warned."  —Lt. Dave Case, author, Out of Cabrini

"Michael A. Black knows Chicago, like a lover, a best friend, his mirror-self. He's intimate with its streets, all their magnificence and their shadowy grittiness, too. He's memorized the city's mysteries, and he plays with them as the backdrop for Blood Trails. Detective Roger Colby and his partner Fred Dix prowl the dark heart of the city in pursuit of a serial killer, believed to be copying the slayings of a man they imprisoned years before. He leads them in a deadly dance, through a story within a story, before Colby—cop-turned-novelist—can write the final chapter. Michael A. Black knows the city, and knows cops…Chicago cops; he used to be one of them. He also knows how to write a damn fine procedural."  —Jean Rabe, author, Downfall

"Besides being a page-turner that's impossible to put down, Blood Trails has a quality that stands out in all of Black's police procedurals—and that is the you-are-there, visceral authenticity the city streets."  —Raymond Benson, author, Die Another Day

"Michael A. Black has made a name for himself delivering one sure-handed thriller after another. Blood Trails is no exception. From the riveting opening scene to the satisfying final page, the pace never lets up."  —William Kent Krueger, author, Ordinary Grace

"There's nothing like a good cop story, and Michael A. Black's Blood Trails delivers the tension and the thrills that keep us up late. Black brings us rich characters: an overzealous retired detective and a timid new one; a scientist trying to play God and wily killers on the loose; an ambitious newswoman and the cop—Rog Colby—whose sharp wit and willingness to jump through bureaucratic hoops carry the day. Black writes with the confidence only an experienced law enforcement professional can bring to this multilayered thriller, moving deftly from one layer to another until the breathtaking denouement."  —Camille Minichino, author,  The Lithium Murder

"In Blood Trails author Michael A. Black takes us on a wild ride from past to present, delivering a plot with more twists and turns than a high-speed chase. A satisfying, engaging journey from start to finish, this latest from former law enforcement officer Black is based on a chilling premise and chock-full of convincing characters that ring true. A hands-down winner of a read!"  —Ann Parker, author, Silver Lies

"A fast-paced crime story that has devious crimes, weird scientific experiments, a Canadian twist, and a cross-border romance. Gets you inside the police station to see how the real cops do it. Intriguing, suspenseful, and entertaining right to the end"  —John Eldridge, author, Second Careers for Street Cops
