Overview

For the first time, the entire oeuvre of one of the Soviet Union's most influential underground artists, Erik Bulatov, is available in print and presented in this instructive and collectible catalog. The study reveals how he defied the state regulation of Soviet art to find his own pictorial language, which combines different sign systems such as written text, visuals, abstraction, and even illusion. Ranging from Bulatov's education at Moscow's Surikov Institute to recent works created in his elective hometown of Paris, this volume focuses on his accomplishments in painting, examining the different periods in the life and creations of this exceptional artist. Detailed provenance information, a bibliography, and a list of exhibitions are also included. This bilingual edition is written in both English and Russian.
