Delving into one of Denmark’s most important and versatile contemporary sculptors, this guide explores Bjørn Nørgaard’s work in sculptures, mural decorations, and avant-garde architecture. These diverse environments are presented in detail, and some of his archaic-seeming large-scale sculptures reminiscent of Aztec temple figures are also highlighted, revealing how they reflect—both humorously and provocatively—current social themes such as the consequences of genetic engineering or gender relationships. The catalogue features a selection of works dating from 1985 to 2009 and introduces a total of 19 sculptures comprising 37 individual figures. Alongside explanations of the individual works, the study reveals Nørgaard’s relationships with Danish writers and visual artists such as Hans Christian Andersen and Per Kirkeby. This edition includes English and German.
