The Greatest Yankees By Uniform Number is a completely original look at the history of the New York Yankees, not by decades or championships, but through the uniform numbers worn by the players. For each uniform number we examine the players who wore that number and determine which among them was the best player while wearing that number. The greats like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Mariano Rivera will, of course, rise to the top, but less famous Yankees such as Gus Niarhos, Dooley Womack, Jim Bouton, and many others will also get their due. Along the way, Paul Semendinger gives the readers big ideas to debate and discuss such as who was the greater catcher Yogi Berra or Bill Dickey (they both wore uniform number 8) and should managers have their numbers retired? The history of uniform numbers, retired numbers, Monument Park, and even greatness is examined.
