Overview

Discover the untold story of Britain's ambitious but ill-fated whaling venture in the subantarctic Auckland Islands.

The Enderby Settlement chronicles the British colony established on the remote Auckland Islands between 1849 and 1852. Conon Fraser delves into the challenges faced by the settlers: isolation, a harsh climate, unproductive soil, and a surprising scarcity of whales. Explore the social dynamics, economic struggles, and the personalities that shaped this unique colonial experiment.

Was it for you? This book is for maritime history buffs, New Zealand history enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by tales of human endeavor in extreme environments. Uncover the reasons behind the colony's collapse and the lasting legacy of this short-lived settlement.
