Peter Owen started his company in 1951, aged twenty-four, running the business from home, with a typewriter his only equipment. The company soon flourished, enabling him to employ staff (his first editor being Muriel Spark) and he was able to bring some of the very best international literature to a very insular British market—and beyond. . .
2011 is Peter Owen's 60th anniversary year and he and his small but dedicated staff continue the tradition of producing new and interesting writing. The company has published seven Nobel Prize winners and boasts a backlist that includes some of the most important writers from all over the world—Hesse, Mishima, Endo, Nin and Kavan are just some of the names first launched worldwide by Peter Owen.
