North of Intention is a panoramic, erotic, anti-accumulative collection of essays centering on the formally investigative North American poetry of the 1970s and 1980s. McCaffery's high-theoretical performances reclaim literary theory for engaged literary practices. —Charles Bernstein
Steve McCaffery's North of Intention is his definitive collection of critical writing, spanning the years in which he solidified his reputation as English Canada's most accomplished experimental writer. McCaffery’s poetry publications include a number of chapbooks and full-length collections, among them Modern Reading: Poems 1969–1990, Seven Pages Missing: Selected Texts Volume One and Volume Two, and Verse and Worse: Selected and New Poems of Steve McCaffery 1989–2009. He has twice received the Gertrude Stein Award for Innovative North American Poetry. He held the David Gray Chair of Poetry and Poetics Program at SUNY Buffalo.
