Overview

A heartwarming tale of a boy, his dog, and the enduring power of loyalty in a changing world. Luke Baldwin's Vow tells the story of a young orphan navigating grief and finding solace in an unlikely friendship.

When Luke's father passes away, he's sent to live with his practical Uncle Henry and kindly Aunt Helen in rural Canada. Homesick and lonely, Luke finds comfort in Dan, the farm's elderly, one-eyed collie. But when Uncle Henry deems Dan useless, Luke makes a vow to protect his friend, leading to a suspenseful stand against the adult world. This classic story explores themes of loss, loyalty, and the challenges of coming of age, reminding us of the enduring value of compassion and the simple joys of friendship. Perfect for children and adults who cherish heartwarming tales of animal companionship and the triumph of the human spirit.

Reviews

“A single vision encompasses these people in all their self-contradictions, betrayals, nobility, bewilderment… every pattern leads out into a larger atmosphere of mercy and wonder.” —Margaret Avison

“The story poses in opposition disinterested love and practical use and teaches how ‘love’ must be flawed by ‘use,’ and how love must be preserved in a world set to destroy it.” —Commonwealth

"Literature I highly recommend it for middle school children, but I would recommend parents read it too, so they can talk about it with the young readers, can explain how things once were with people and pets - and sometimes still are." —Library Thing
