Overview

In 17th-century New Amsterdam, a young indentured servant faces prejudice and suspicion.

Thirteen-year-old Jonica, an indentured servant to the wealthy Van der Voort family, works hard to earn her place in their household. But when a theft occurs, Jonica becomes the prime suspect, testing her loyalty and resilience. Can she prove her innocence and find acceptance in a society rife with social divisions?

Set against the backdrop of colonial New York, Jonica's Island explores themes of prejudice, social class, and the power of forgiveness. For readers who enjoy historical fiction with strong female characters and coming-of-age stories.
