Overview

Find out how Ethan met his spooky pal in this sweet prequel to I Need My Monster and Hey! That's My Monster

One night, when Ethan reaches under his bed for a toy truck, he finds this note instead: "Monsters! Meet here for final test." Ethan is sure his parents are trying to trick him into staying under the covers, until he sees five colorful sets of eyes blinking at him from beneath the bed. Soon, a colorful parade of quirky, squeaky little monsters compete to become Ethan's monster. But only the little green monster, Gabe, has the perfect blend of stomach-rumbling and snorting needed to get Ethan into bed and keep him there so he falls asleep—which as everyone knows, is the real reason for monsters under beds. With its perfect balance of giggles and shivers, this silly-spooky prequel to the award-winning I Need My Monster and Hey, That's MY Monster! will keep young readers entertained.

Reviews

PRAISE FOR I NEED MY MONSTER Winner of 6 State Book Awards and included on 11 State lists "Dramatic in perspective, McWilliam's exaggerated, digitally colored art renders the monsters in a spectrum of neon hues and outlandish shapes. The collaborators ably balance some bedtime chills with humor, and Ethan's enthusiasm for his monster should prove infectious." —Publishers Weekly "A fun nighttime read for those who enjoy a bit of shiver as they are tucked in to bed . . . a great read-aloud for a slightly older audience at a night-themed story hour." —School Library Journal "Noll turns the tables on monster fears by introducing readers to Ethan, a little boy who can't fall asleep without the ragged breathing and claw-scratching of his favorite monster, Gabe." —Booklist "A clever anxiety-defuser and an unusually well done double-debut." —Kirkus Reviews "A perfect read-aloud for squirmy youngsters, especially boys . . . exquisitely creepy, perfect for. . . all monster-lovers." —The Sacramento Bee "The same kids who loved Neil Gaiman's The Wolves in the Walls are sure to appreciate I Need My Monster too. Highly recommended." —Monster Librarian.com "[Librarians and teachers,] be sure to put the book jacket out where students can touch and shiver with delight." —Practically Paradise blog , School Library Journal PRAISE FOR HEY, THAT'S MY MONSTER! Literary Classics Book Award, Silver Medal in Fantasy, 2017 Mississippi Magnolia Children's Choice Award PreK-2, 2018 "Emma is cut from the same cloth as Boo from Monsters Inc.—she's tickled, not terrified, by the visiting monsters—and McWilliam's cinematic artwork embraces the comedy of the situation as Emma puts bracelets on the snakelike tail of one monster and jumps rope with the tentacles of another." —Publishers Weekly The . . . monsters in McWilliam's toy-strewn bedroom scenes are show stealers, whether exuding pools of pink slime or rearing up in glowering, warty menace in vain efforts to get Emma into bed." —Kirkus Reviews "This is a charming tale children will love. The bright, vivid illustrations bring a movie like quality to the pages and really bring the text to life. Young readers and adults alike will be looking for the next monster in this unique collection." —Lisette Baez, Children's Literature
