Playwright, critic, journalist, poet and fiction writer, Bruce Mason broke extraordinary new ground in the New Zealand cultural landscape. From 1960 to 1961, he edited the Maori news magazine Te Ao Hou. A leading force in New Zealand’s first professional theatre, Downstage, and the author of thirty-four plays, Mason worked tirelessly to make his concerns a matter of public debate, utilising all forms of media to reach New Zealanders. He was awarded a CBE in 1980, and in 1996 the Bruce Mason Theatre opened on the North Shore.
