Black Heron Press published its first title in 1984 and has published from two to six titles per year since. The press primarily publishes literary fiction, both adult and young adult (YA), as well as select memoirs, poetry, and nonfiction concerned with independent publishing. Books published by Black Heron Press have won or been finalists for a number of national and regional awards, including the American Book Award, the Hopwood Award for Major Fiction, the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, the Chautauqua Prize, the Foreword Reviews Indiefab Award, and others.
In addition, Black Heron Press gives the Black Heron Press Award for Social Fiction. The recipient of this award is selected by the editors and is given only occasionally.
