Political Subject, Caleb Beckwith’s first full-length poetry collection is smart and it smarts. An impressive tightrope walk, Political Subject takes aim at the contradictions of espousing pure and good politics within the throes of a world ravaged by capitalism: he tracks the march of the “soylent / super soldier’” and grants us a glimpse at the world through “pop tantra respect- / ability goggles.” There is no steady ground to stand on or escape, even amidst the agonizing and alluring cry “I’m complicit / get me out of here!.” Beckwith refuses easy targets, tackling a far more gnarled condition, where the logic and illogic of oppressive systems and supposed combatants meet. These poems put pressure on the political subject to resist reified, regurgitated critique in favor of a “hot garbage / stress test.” Political Subject is an epic dictionary of coupled meanings that meticulously work through, define, and unravel our desiccated, technofied, desirous landscape, unfurling a poethical vocabulary to illuminate and complicate our supposed and actual commitments to one another.
Caleb Beckwith is a writer and editor living in Kingston, NY; previous works include Heat Win and Hi, You’re Beautiful.
