Overview

A celebration of women’s achievements in the art of gardening

From the golden age in English history to today’s gardeners and designers, this volume recognizes women’s contributions to gardening in Britain and around the world spanning more than four centuries. Despite growing vegetables for their kitchens, tending herbs for their medicine cupboards, and teaching other women about the craft before agricultural schools officially existed, women have been mere footnotes in the horticultural annals for specimens collected abroad. These pioneers’ influence on the style of gardens in the present day is illustrated here in a style both accessible and scholarly. Presenting a rare bouquet, this collection shares the stories of more than 200 women who have been involved with garden design, plant collecting, flower arranging, botanical art, garden writing, and education.

Reviews

“This delightful and impeccably researched history claims a place on the crowded gardening shelf … Highly recommended to all armchair or actual gardeners interested in the history of gardening.”—Library Journal

"Horwood strikes gold."  —Guardian

"For anyone interested in the long and fascinating history of women and their gardens, Horwood's book, with its vast scope . . . and plethora of fascinating detail, is an admirable starting point."  —Daily Mail

"It is about time that women gardeners received the generous tribute awarded to them by Horwood's splendid book . . . lively, superbly researched, and highly enjoyable."  —Literary Review

"An interesting, well-told story."  —Financial Times

"Women . . . are everywhere in gardening history. In gathering their stories and describing their influences and achievements Horwood has done a terrific, pioneering job. Beautifully structured and cogently written, [this book is] rich, full, and lasting as potpourri. Neither gardens, nor women, will seem quite the same again."  —Times

"Catherine Horwood has written a scholarly and, yet, immensely readable book, bringing to life some extraordinary women.” —Page Dickey, author of Embroidered Ground: Revisiting the Garden and Gardens in the Spirit of Place

“Focusing on the fact of history that women have often been excluded from the serious study of plants, Horwood brings these women into their rightful place in the horticultural spotlight. At more than 400 pages, there is much to be discovered about these pioneering women.”  —The Garden Bench blog
