Overview

An underground classic, Grayson's debut short story collection introduced readers to the author's quirky, funny postmodern fiction and such characters as Buddy's grandfather, who wonders why no Jewish people ever win on "Bowling for Dollars" and thinks that Farrah Fawcett has a foreign accent; Sarah Lawrence of Arabia, who hides under a college student's bed while his mother and her maid won't stop cleaning his room; "Chief Justice Burger, Teen Idol"; the depressed superhero Ordinary Man, whose sinus problems cause him to spit phlegm at his arch-enemy Professor Should; and the cast of the 27-year-old TV soap opera "Go Not to Lethe," including the actress who once played Richie's girlfriend and who will not return to the show unless it will get her father out of a Nazi concentration camp; in the controversial title story, Hitler himself arrives at Kennedy Airport via Laker Airlines and proceeds to endear himself to the residents of Brooklyn."Where avant garde fiction goes when it becomes standup comedy." —Greil Marcus, Rolling Stone"Really funny. . . How could I resist?" —Liz Smith, New York Daily News"Grayson pokes fun at American life – politicians, business, television and fads – in these sharp, witty stories. The staccato style, laced with puns and wisecracks, is apt for these amusing satires." —Publishers Weekly"Richard Grayson has the wild sense of humor of a 'Saturday Night Live' regular. Some may find his gags offensive; others will be laughing all the way to the analyst's couch." —Newsday"What is special is Grayson's gift for dreaming up outrageous premises. Grayson is shaking funny ingredients together like dice." —Los Angeles Times"Shines with intelligence and even wit." —Cleveland Plain Dealer"Truly beautifully done. Wonderful!" —San Francisco Voice"Grayson is the beginning of a whole new wave. He deserves your attention." —Baltimore City Paper "These stories strike like lunacy. Man, this guy can write." —Delray Beach (Florida) News-Journal"Even in a story one might quarrel with, Grayson is still so good there is always a lot to like and admire. This is a terrific book. Read it. Give it to your friends." —Washington Review of the Arts
