Overview

Many people crave what might be called a safe adventure. They would love to be immersed in the wild, yet at the same time know they can drive home at the end of the day. Wild and Free provides a selection of destinations in Britain where people can become immersed in the wild. All the sites will be located within a couple of hours’ drive from a fairsized town or city, so they will be accessible and not completely remote. Most of the sites won’t have facilities, so the idea is to take a picnic or visit an AA-recommended pub for lunch. This isn’t a walking guide, so the intention is to be quickly immersed in the countryside without a long hike. This book also aims to guide people towards wildlife experiences. The sites are therefore chosen not just for their solitude, but also for their abundance of wild mammals, birds, insects and flowers.
