Overview

Now in paperback, a picture book about friendship and freedom from the creator of Noni the Pony and Magic Beach

Matilda loves staying at Grandma Lucky's, riding Luna in the front paddock and playing with the painted ponies in their carved wooden wagon.

The gold palomino, the chestnut, the bay,
the pinto, the brown and the dappley grey.

One day, Lucky tells Matilda about when she was a little girl and the real ponies were her friends . . .

A big, beautiful story about friendship and freedom, from Australia's favorite picture book creator, Alison Lester.

Reviews

"Lester’s cheerful illustrations nicely match the text, yet offer welcome surprises." —New York Times on Noni the Pony

"The most adorable title to come down the pike in a long time—and it delivers on every page…. Fans of Lester (Running with the Horses) know that she’s an expert horse portraitist." —Publishers Weekly starred review of Noni the Pony

“Lester’s illustrations are charmingly done in black outline with pencil, watercolor, and collage interiors. Simple and bold, with uncluttered backgrounds, they will attract the youngest readers, and the soothing ending will satisfy them.” —School Library Journal on Noni the Pony

"A favorite Australian illustrator pairs realistic and imaginative experiences at the beach. . . .  The carefully crafted verse descriptions are pleasant enough, but the lucid, beautifully observed illustrations here are outstanding: a splendid evocation of summers past and summers still to come." —Kirkus Reviews on Magic Beach
