Overview

It's time for monkey business in this fifth outing for Teddington's wildest family, the Bolds

The Bolds are very surprised to be visited by Fred's mother, Granny Imamu. She's traveled all the way from Africa, and now she's here, she does not approve of what she finds. Hyenas, living as people? Whatever next! Granny Imamu starts to stir up mischief with twins Bobby and Betty, encouraging them to get in touch with their beastly side at school. And then the twins' teacher comes to the Bolds with a rather unusual problem: her grown-up son Jeffrey just isn't like other people. He's rather hairy, doesn't much like to talk, and loves to monkey about. If animals can become people, could it happen the other way around?

Reviews

"[T]he book's hilarious plot and abundant illustrations make it a top choice for reluctant readers. . . . Wildly original and very funny." —Kirkus Reviews starred review of The Bolds

"Middle-graders will revel in the low-brow silliness, with delightful illustrations of the joyful, sharp-toothed hyena family by British artist David Roberts. The Bolds is not pure frivolity, it's also a celebration of ingenuity, tolerance, untiring good humor and big hyena hearts." --starred, Shelf Awareness on The Bolds

"In this humorously off-kilter tall tale . . . Roberts's manically expressive b&w illustrations capitalize on the unapologetically silly premise . . . as Clary mixes animal fact with imaginative, entertaining fiction." —Publishers Weekly on The Bolds

"This fast-paced read . . . [has] enough wacky situations and outright jokes . . . to engage reluctant readers. . . . Underscoring the slapstick appeal is a message about understanding others' differences. . . . Fans of Roald Dahl will find much to appreciate here." --School Library Journal on The Bolds

"Can be read on a metaphorical level as a story with satiric edges about cultural outsiders looking for ways to fit in or just enjoyed for its comical mishaps and broad humor." --Booklist Online on The Bolds to the Rescue

"[T]he tale avoids didacticism, delivering its message of tolerance, inclusion, and kindness with irresistibly quirky, anarchic glee. A winner of a sequel, just the ticket for lovers of Roald Dahl." --Kirkus Reviews on The Bolds to the Rescue

"This series sports the humor of Captain Underpants and the heart of Winnie-the-Pooh . . . . A great choice for any library collection serving kids." --School Library Journal on The Bolds to the Rescue
