Overview
Freya Blackwood and Jan Ormerod's reassuring tale Maudie and Bear has been broken out into individual stories and made into stunning board books for little hands to enjoy
Meet Maudie, a plucky young girl, and her friend Bear, a gentle giant with a heart of gold. In The Bike Ride, Maudie's endless planning is as tiring as the bike ride itself.
Reviews
"Here’s what’s wonderful about this book: Maudie, beautifully illustrated by Blackwood, is an utterly realistic Everychild whose concerns center around herself. . . . What’s also special is the evocative art, softly colored with almost indistinct lines, that places Maudie and Bear in an earlier era (save the sunscreen), with Maudie looking a bit like Christopher Robin." —Booklist starred review of Maudie and Bear
“With its whimsical illustrations, its charming characters, its clever story, and its funny ending, this book shows to great effect how a simple story can be a rich one.” —
Through the Looking Glass Children's Booke Reviews
“This lovely British import about Maudie and Bear centers on the sweet pair’s afternoon adventure. The friends would like to go outside for some exercise, but first Maudie must find her sunglasses, their hats, her scarf, and the sunscreen and bug spray, as Bear patiently waits. Finally, they are ready. The kidlike logic and Ormerod’s spare text in combination with Blackwood’s painterly soft colors are a perfect match. A charming choice.” —School Library Journal
