Overview

Accounts of Black Consciousness have tended to place the discourse in a continuum of resistance to white minority rule, and to assess its significance in bringing about the downfall of apartheid. While these are valid historical narratives, they have occluded some of the deeper resonances and significances of both the movement and the body of ideas.  This book takes its cue from Steve Biko's own injunction to see the evolution of Black Consciousness alongside other political doctrines and movements of resistance in South Africa. It identifies progressive thought and movements-such as radical Christianity and ecumenism, student radicalism, feminism, and trade unionism-as valuable interlocutors that nonetheless also competed for the mantle of liberation, espousing different visions of freedom. These progressive movements were open to what Ian Macqueen characterises as the 'shockwaves' that Black Consciousness created. It is only with such a focus that we can fully appreciate the significance of Black Consciousness, both as a movement and as an ideology emanating from South Africa in the late 1960s and 1970s. 

Author Biography

Luis Gimenez Amoros is a research fellow at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape. Previously, he was an ethnomusicology lecturer at the University of Fort Hare and a postdoctoral fellow in the Unit of Zimbabwean Studies at Rhodes University. Gimenez Amoros has conducted research on transcultural music, postcolonial studies and new/old mobilities in precolonial music in Western Sahara, Mali, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa, as well as in India and Spain. He combines his academic career with composing and has released solo albums and performed with numerous international artists. Regarding studies on Zimbabwean music, Gimenez Amoros has performed with many mbira artists and conducted the digital return of Zimbabwean recordings from the International Library of African Music (ILAM) related to his book Tracing the Mbira Sound Archive in Zimbabwe (Routledge, 2018). Maurice T. Vambe is a professor of African Literature in English in the English Studies Department at the University of South Africa. He has published extensively on song, film and African literature in English and the Shona languages. His latest book is Genocide in African Fiction (Africa Institute for Culture, Peace, Dialogue and Tolerance Studies in collaboration with Africa World Press, 2018).
