The invasion of Parihaka, Taranaki, by Pakeha (European) soldiers in 1881 is commemorated and explored in this book as one of the major historical events in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand. It analyzes the events leading up to the invasion and the immense strength and spirit of the Parihaka community, which continues today. One hundred and twenty years of art, poetry, and waiata are brought together in this study.
Author Biography
Te Miringa Hohaia is a prominent figure in the political and cultural affairs of Taranaki and in the revival of traditional Parihaka waiata and poi. He lives in Taranaki, New Zealand. Gregory O’Brien is an award-winning poet who has also worked widely as an art curator and writer. Lara Strongman is the program manager at City Gallery in Wellington. They both live in Wellington, New Zealand.
