Overview

Britons have long held an enormous interest in France and things French. This popularity is expressed by a large amount of literature on France, including books on French history, archaeology, architecture, chateaux and wine. Despite the fact that many of these works have a strong regional/landscape context, the way that the landscape itself is treated is far inferior to the treatment of the cultural context presented. One common error is simply to describe the landscape in terms of its constituent rocks (its geology), this leads to confusion between the age of the rocks, the age of geological structures and the age of the landscape itself – how processes , such as erosion, at work on those rocks and structures has formed the present landscape.Adrian Harvey presents a book on French landscapes in a synthesis that emphasises their geomorphology in two sections. Adrian Harvey is a retired Professor of Geomorphology from the University of Liverpool. He has lived in and studied French geomorphology for many years.
