David Leyonhjelm is an Australian Senator for the Liberal Democratic Party. He was elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2016. As the first politician to be elected to an Australian parliament representing a genuinely libertarian party, David bears a major responsibility. While the libertarian concept is relatively well known in the United States, and classical liberalism is somewhat understood in Britain and Europe generally, neither is part of the usual political dialogue in Australia.
