Overview

Cursed by tenderhearted witches, saved by Nazarene healers, and haunted by brazen lunatics, the characters in FIELD NOTES FOR THE EARTHBOUND yearn to escape the relentless horizon of Northwestern Ohio. These connected stories chronicle an area dying to itself: shedding its history and awakening to modernity—to highways, speed, bottled beer, and rock-n-roll.

Author Biography

John Mauk has a Masters degree in literature from the University of Toledo and a PhD in rhetoric from Bowling Green State University. He writes and works at the intersection of rhetoric and fiction. He has three college writing textbooks, published by Wadsworth/Cengage. In 2010, his short collection The Rest of Us won Michigan Writer's Cooperative Press chapbook contest, and its first story, "The Earthbound," was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Black Lawrence Press named Mauk's first full story collection, FIELD NOTES FOR THE EARTHBOUND, a finalist in its Hudson Prize contest. The collection, published in 2014, includes a novella and six stories set on the Ohio flatland. He currently teaches at Miami University of Ohio.
