Overview

Through written correspondence, Francesc Torralba and Vicenç Villatoro—a self-proclaimed Christian skeptic and an agnostic, respectively—discuss topics such as the meaning of life, a created God versus a creating God, the sacred and the profane, the religious sphere and the public sphere, death and consolation, ethics without God, beauty, the mystery of evil, the transferring of values and beliefs, the existence of Christians, and spirituality without faith. This collection of back-and-forth letters is a dialogue of ideas and experiences shared in writing over half of a year, from the beginning of the summer through the Christmas celebrations. The contents of the book juxtapose not only a believer and a nonbeliever, but also a philosopher and a writer and a theologian and a journalist. Both men often treat the collected letters as a journal of open, uninhibited statements about the inner and outer paths of life itself.
