Overview

The past meets the future in Book Four of the Code Word series

The EMP blast set off by Shawn & Destiny 20 years ago (at the end of book 3), foiled plans for mass extermination, but has divided the country. West of the Rockies had its power grid destroyed, and is a Wild West with no electrical grid, governed by the Organites. East of the Mississippi is still tightly controlled by Apex (the ubiquitous AI system), and is racing ever more quickly into the future, leaving the area in between as a hotly contested, lawless war zone. Adam, a restless 20-year old roaming the country with his parents (Shawn and Destiny) finds an antiquated communication device and makes contact with a young woman, Joan, from Apex's side. But when it is discovered that an asteroid is heading for earth, our heroes are sent on a desperate chase to reboot an archaic satellite-based system for protecting the earth before a catastrophic collision occurs. Humans and A.I. have very different ways of assessing their risk of total extinction and instead of cooperation, the battle for survival intensifies. Meanwhile, as Adam and Joan grow closer, we will soon discover that she is only half human and half machineâ€â€the first hybridâ€â€making her an extension of Apex itself. Both will have to choose sides when they find themselves on opposite sides of the battlefield.
