A simply written guide about pregnancy, childbirth, infant health, and safety Offering solid guidance for mothers and mothers-to-be whose reading skills are limited and who may have limited access to adequate health care, this guide focuses on basics like prenatal care, lifestyle choices, nutritional advice, and baby's first few months. This fifth edition includes updated and expanded information on mental health issues, including postpartum depression and anxiety, for both moms and partners; hot topics such as immunizations, breastfeeding, and coping with inconsolable crying; best-practice guidelines for car seats, safe sleep, babywearing, and fall prevention; the value of having effective support during labor, birth, and the postpartum period; and insurance coverage, including the Affordable Care Act, and medical assistance for low-income pregnant women. Checklists, a glossary, and an expanded list of reliable internet resources round out this invaluable book.

"In our review of prenatal education materials, we have found Baby & Me to be the most useful basic guide for a widely diverse audience. We chose it for ParaNatal Care of America's program and I have never regretted that decision."  —Dan Wigart, Chairman ParaNatal Care of America

Author Biography

Deborah Davis Stewart has focused on making complex information understandable throughout her career as a health professional and advocate for children's safety. She served in the Peace Corps in India and with Planned Parenthood in Washington, DC, working in family planning and nutrition. She ran a national advocacy group focused on child safety in motor vehicles and continues her leadership in this field. In the last three decades she has written low-reading-level material materials focused on the health issues of mothers and children from pregnancy through the early years of childhood. Jenny Burris Harvey has spent her career supporting, educating, and empowering families to be healthy, safe, and happy. With a background in human development, family support, psychology, parent education, and crisis intervention, she has worked and volunteered in a variety of health agencies and community programs serving diverse populations of families with young children. Her expertise in child injury prevention and life-saving skills has led her to work with clinicians, national health organizations, and federal safety programs, but her true passion lies in giving reliable and easy-to-understand information to new and expectant parents before, during, and after the birth of their child. Helping them to feel supported and prepared to raise healthy families is her greatest goal.
