Publicity Spotlight:

Axel Scheffler, Inaugural Illustrator of the Year, Uses Speech to Denounce Brexit

Axel Scheffler Titles

The prolific Axel Scheffler was named the first ever Illustrator of the Year at The British Book Awards 2018, held on May 14 in London. Scheffler has been illustrating books since 1988 and has since created or contributed to more than 100 titles. Works like The Gruffalo and Stick Man have earned him a place among the UK’s most beloved, instantly recognizable artists in publishing. IPG distributes a healthy collection of his work, in English and in translation, through Trafalgar Square Publishing, including titles like Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes and Axel Scheffler Treasury of Rhyming Stories.

Scheffler, though he is originally from Germany, has been an active member of the UK publishing community for decades, and he used his acceptance speech at The British Book Awards to speak out against the country’s official removal from the EU. "It’s just ten months until 'Freedom Day,'” he said, “and I—and my fellow EU citizens, many working in the UK book industry—are still living in uncertainty. We have, so far, no guarantee that we can still live and work here in the future.”

“I worry when I look at the post-Brexit future,” he continued, “for the children who grew up with our books. What went wrong? Weren't their parents or grandparents reading Room On The Broom with its message of the importance of friendship, kindness, solidarity, and partnership?"
