Associate Designer

FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Director of Production
Employment Status: Full-time

Overview

The Associate Designer collaborates with the design, marketing, and editorial departments to produce creative solutions to address the marketing needs of the publishing units. This includes designing promotional materials as well as assisting Senior Designers with mechanical jacket/cover set-up and interior corrections.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Designing marketing materials including posters, postcards, bookmarks, sell sheets, ads, and display materials (such as cartons and displays for mass merchandise deals as well as trade show booths)
  • Organizing and maintaining the design department archives for CRP/TRB
  • Compiling and sending out files for foreign rights deals (which includes doctoring up files to remove images if we don’t have proper permissions)
  • Secures photo permissions for cover and interior images as needed.
  • Setting up cover mechanicals for paperback editions of previously published hardcovers, POD titles, reprints moving to new vendors
  • Inputting corrections to book interiors, jackets, and covers as overflow/back-up for Senior Designers.
  • Create barcodes
  • Biannual catalog layout and production for TRB and CRP
  • Preflighting images for titles being typeset by Nord Compo
  • Optional: Interior illustrations for children’s activity books and other spot illustrations as needed

Qualificiations:

  • 1-2 years’ experience with book cover design, interior layout/typesetting, and marketing/ad design.
  • Expert in InDesign, Photoshop, Quark, Acrobat, and Illustrator.
  • Goal-oriented with the ability to work on multiple projects while managing various projects.
  • Strong aesthetic skills with the ability to combine various colors, fonts, and layouts.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and collaborate with a team.
  • Physical abilities—fine motor skill and hand-eye coordination.
  • Travel requirements—occasional local book store excursions for market research.
