Overview

A powerful mystery from award-winning author Anthony Eaton, this edition of A New Kind of Dreaming is a special reissue of a modern Australian classic Jamie Riley has hit rock bottom. Busted for stealing cars, he's been shipped off to serve time in Port Barren, a stinking hot town stuck between the desert and the sea. The minute Jamie arrives, he can feel something is not quite right about Port Barren—the town has a past it doesn't want to share. After being warned that Port Barren is his last chance before jail, Jamie resolves to serve his time and get out. But when he discovers an old, wrecked boat on the beach and starts asking questions, it becomes obvious that local cop Elliot Butcher has it in for him. As he gets closer to the truth, things start going wrong around town. With no one else to blame, Jamie realizes surviving Port Barren is going to be way harder than he thought.

Reviews

"Eaton has created an unputdownable book … this is an enthralling story for teenage readers, maintaining a great deal of anticipation, excitement and pace. A well-told and beautifully written tale." —Bookseller + Publisher

"Eaton succeeds in establishing a terrific atmosphere, very vividly evoking life in the hot dusty town claustrophobically sandwiched between sea and desert. His prose is tight, the narrative thrust strong and convincing in its exploration of the continuing legacy of the past." —Canberra Times

A New Kind of Dreaming makes you think about the crime and injustice that go unpunished in our world today. It is an excellent tale … I guarantee that you will find it very difficult to put this novel away." —Courier-Mail

"The author has achieved a balance between the excruciatingly physical, and spiritual transcendence, while maintaining a page-turning pace. The forces of good and evil are vividly evoked - and they bear a close resemblance to reality, where unsolved desert murders and shocking tragedies amongst boat refugees are all-too familiar. Strong characters, awesome landscape and succinct dialogue add up to a memorable novel in A New Kind of Dreaming." —Reading Time

"This thriller is bound to enthral even the most reluctant reader … the careful writing is as spare as the countryside it describes. A well-rounded, thoroughly enjoyable story, adeptly told." —School Library Journal
