Publicity Spotlight:

Netflix adapts CRP’s biography of National Lampoon creator Doug Kenney

A Futile & Stupid Gesture

Netflix has officially released the poster, trailer, and premiere dates for their Netflix Original Film, A Futile & Stupid Gesture, based on Chicago Review Press’s book of the same name. Debuting at the Sundance Film Festival on Wednesday, January 24 (and on Netflix on Friday, January, 26), the film tells the story of Doug Kenney, the driving force behind National Lampoon in all of its iterations—magazine, radio show, stage productions, and iconic comedy films. Directed by Wet Hot American Summer’s David Wain and starring Will Forte, Domhnall Gleeson, Joel McHale, and Emmy Rossum, the film is highly anticipated by Sundance-goers and comedy buffs across the country.

Doug Kenney introduced the world to some of comedy’s most illustrious figures—Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Gilda Radner, among others—and was a guiding hand behind such classic movies as Caddyshack and Animal House. Though the pop culture impact of National Lampoon lives on nearly 50 years after its founding, Kenney’s career, along with his tumultuous personal life, has been largely overlooked until now.

For a behind the scenes glimpse at how Kenney developed the legacy of National Lampoon, watch the newly released film trailer, or check out the Chicago Review Press book that inspired it.
