Overview

Sometimes monsters aren’t what they seem. School has started and Bobby has a big problem: his teacher, Ms. Kirby, is a real monster with green skin and pointy teeth who roars and won’t let the kids go out for recess. One Saturday morning, Bobby sees his teacher in the park. At first, he wants to escape—but the two talk and Bobby learns things about his teacher that he never expected. Incredibly, Ms. Kirby’s pointy teeth disappear and her greenish skin takes on a more human color. And it’s still true when he returns to school on Monday . . . at least, most of the time.

Reviews

"Brown, imagining Ms. Kirby from a child's perspective, handles her transformation smoothly, prompting readers to revisit earlier pages. Comic traces of monstrosity linger in Ms Kirby (she still goes green at classroom clowning) yet Brown makes it clear that teachers are people too-even the "mean" ones." —Publishers Weekly, starred review, on the English language edition

"This playful, eye-catching story goes a long way to humanize both teachers and students." —Booklist, starred review, on the English language edition

"Here's hoping readers who are similarly challenged in the behavior department will get both messages: Teachers are people, and they give back what they get." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on the English language edition

"Bobby's rascally charm will win the hearts of readers." —School Library Journal, on the English language edition

"The clever, texturized illustrations, concise text, comical storyline, and sweet sentiment make this a near-perfect storytime choice for young children." —Library Media Connection, starred review, on the English language edition

"[A] story that students and teachers will enjoy equally." —The Horn Book, on the English language edition
