Overview

Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most influential composers of the 19th century and a dominant force in Italian opera for 50 years, is illuminated in this thorough exploration geared toward young musicians. Offering insight into Verdi’s long life—from the horrible loss of his family to the disapproving opinions of his neighbors—and opening the world of opera and Italian culture, this resource creates an accessible and tangible investigation into the elite world of classical opera. Engaging and creative activities, such as singing like a diva, making a panpipe, playing bocce ball, and sketching a costume for Falstaff, reinforce the musical concepts and terms that are introduced within and elucidate the times in which Verdi lived. Along with learning about various opera jobs, opera production, what takes place at rehearsals, and opera house history, inquisitive kids will gain a fuller understanding of Verdi’s life, times, and music and how the composer intersected with the great musicians and events of his lifetime.

Reviews

“A good choice for young musicians.” —School Library Journal

“This will be particularly useful for parents and classroom teachers hoping to make the study of great music more interesting.” —Kirkus Reviews

"There’s not a lot out there for children about opera, and Verdi in particular, so this is a solid choice for libraries looking to beef up their music collections." —School Library Journal

"Bauer competently ties together Verdi’s life and the development of Italy into a unified country in a way that helps readers (both youth and adult) understand the complexity of each." —Booklist

"The writing is in-depth and lucid; most young readers will easily glide through the various phases of Verdi’s multifaceted life. ...The book’s strengths lie in the author’s emphasis on the historic and cultural context that binds the man, the music and the milieu. 'Opera is full of drama and emotion, intrigue and action,' the soprano Deborah Voigt writes in her foreword. By the time they reach the end, most young readers are likely to agree with that assessment." —The New York Times

"The author has created a global education gem perfect for parents and teachers who are looking for an in-depth and interactive way to introduce kids to the roots of opera music and the history and culture of Italy. Brava!" —Moms Gone Global

"Among the most impressive accomplishments are the ways Bauer unfolds the story of how Verdi became involved in the struggle for a unified Italy, the place where “real life” intersects the creative artist." —Greg Hettmansberger, Classically Speaking, Madison Magazine

"Verdi for Kids is a perfect introduction to the life of Giuseppe Verdi . . . young readers will have plenty to choose from when it comes to finding a starting point, not just for learning about Giuseppe Verdi, but for music as well." —Quarter Notes magazine
