Overview

Available again after nearly a century of neglect, this edition is fully one-third longer than the common, censored version of Sinclair's novel/expose of the meatpacking industry. This edition contains a great deal of social commentary and ethnic color left out of the commercial edition. It also contains much horrifying detail about meatpacking omitted from the censored edition because it was considered too gruesome.

Reviews

"This See Sharp reprint presents the whole text . . . essential for all libraries, especially at this affordable price." —Library Journal

"A must read. Recommended for all public, academic and junior through senior high schools." —Kansas Libraries

Author Biography

Upton Sinclair was one of America's most important novelists of the early and mid 20th century. His novels dealt with social themes, inlcuding the coal war and the oil industry. Sinclair narrowly missed being elected governor of California in 1934, his loss being due to a vicious and well-funded smear campaign by big business interests.
