Shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal and winner of the Children's Book Award, this stunning picture book tells the gripping and poignant story of a young penguin's survival in the AntarcticSolo the penguin chick is left cold and alone on the hazardous wastes of the Antarctic, when her mother leaves on a final desperate search for food. With savage skua birds on the wing and leopard seals lurking in the icy waters, Solo's chances of survival are cruelly slim—will she make it alive? Information about wildlife combines with icy, gorgeous art to tell Solo's compelling tale.

Reviews

"Polished, striking art . . . Geraghty's illustrations bring the Antarctic winter so close that one can't help but shiver. He approaches his compositions with almost photographic clarity, and his delicacy in applying a virtual rainbow of hues mimes the sun's own skill at painting snow, ice and water."  —Publishers Weekly

"Similar in tone to Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny and Barbara Joosse's Mama, Do You Love Me? Geraghty's illustrations are outstanding and mirror the stark beauty of the icy landscape."  —School Library Journal
