Sing Out! began as a folk music magazine, founded in 1950 by Pete Seeger and others as an outgrowth of the Peoples' Songs movement of the late 1940s. In the 1980s, we formed a non-profit organization, and expanded our programs to include book publishing. Our first title was Rise Up Singing, a group singing songbook that has sold more than 750,000 worldwide since its debut in 1988. Our organizational mission is preserve and support the cultural diversity and heritage of all traditional and contemporary folk musics, and to encourage making music a part of our everyday lives.
