Publicity and PR

IPG has a five-person in-house publicity and PR department that offers consultation to all IPG-distributed publishers in regard to press releases, media lists, publicity-campaign strategies for particular titles, media-submission guidelines and deadlines, author tours, and much more.

Catalogs are sent twice a year to 1,300 important media professionals. This mailing produces many media leads. Review-copy requests are forwarded to the publishers or filled immediately if they are time sensitive. Contacts from the media are directed to the relevant publisher.

The IPG publicity staff also, for a very reasonable fee, provides full media campaigns-print, electronic, and web publicity, as well as author tours-for some IPG publishers, often with spectacular results.

Many publishers make use of the IPG publicity services on an individualized basis, requesting, for instance, only media lists or press releases. Services of any kind are only offered in cases where the staff is confident that the results will justify the costs.

Consultation and support offered by the Publicity Department at no charge to publishers:

  • Executes a more than 1,300-piece catalog mailing to the media seasonally, including cover letter and review-copy request form
  • Forwards review-copy requests to general trade, children's, and small press publishers
  • Fulfills deadline-sensitive review-copy requests for all publishers
  • Recommends freelance publicists and reviews their proposed contracts for cost-effectiveness, legitimacy, and feasibility
  • Provides the BEA pre-registered media list
  • Presents IPG catalogs to key New York City media in personal, face-to-face meetings
  • Maintains detailed "working with the book trade" documents at www.ipgbook.com
  • Creates and updates the in-depth "Publicity 101" series, which provides a complete publicity campaign template at www.ipgbook.com
  • Invites publishers to participate in a two-day "publicity boot camp" providing publicity training and workshops for press release and cover letter writing
  • Fields media phone calls and directs them to publishers as needed

Elisabeth Malzahn
Publicity Manager

Elisabeth Malzahn joined the IPG publicity department in January 2004. Elisabeth started as a publicist and later worked as senior publicist for IPG, where she placed IPG books and authors on such top national media as Alternet.org, ESPN'S Cold Pizza, InStyle, Marie Claire, New York Review of Books, Premiere, The New York Times, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Talk of the Nation.

Prior to IPG, Elisabeth was the academic product manager for the Perseus Books Group, creating academic marketing campaigns for both trade and textbooks, and worked as marketing coordinator for Westview Press on upper-level college textbooks. Elisabeth also has experience from two small literary publishing houses, Ruminator Books and Coffee House Press. She graduated from St. Olaf College with a double degree in English and American Racial and Multicultural Studies with an concentration in the Africa Diaspora.

Elisabeth is now responsible for the management and publicity for both IPG publicity client publishers and Trafalgar Square Publishing. The IPG publicity department has a team of publicity experts who are all available to answer publisher questions and provide publicity consultation.
