Overview

"This thoughtful retelling of one of the century's most notorious crimes deserves several readings."  —Publishers Weekly, starred review

The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinating investigation are presented in this masterful graphic novel retelling of an unsolved murder from the 1920s. On the evening of September 14, 1922, Reverend Edward Hall and Mrs. Eleanor Mills take a stroll in the New Brunswick town park. Shots are heard and two days later their bodies are found lying neatly next to each other, love letters strewn around them, and a scarf obscures the fact that Mrs. Mills’ throat has been slit. The two had been involved in an affair and the press hungrily devours the story. No evidence is sufficient to lead to an indictment, so the mystery intensifies with conjecture: Was this a dual suicide? Was this perpetrated by a jealous rival? Four years later the case reopens due to new evidence indicting the reverend’s wife, but she is an upstanding member of the community who vehemently denies that her husband ever had an affair. This is a tragic story told with beguiling relish and expert illustration in a distinctive style fitting of the era.

Reviews

"Geary's archly antiquated drawing style is ideally suited for bringing bygone eras to vivid, convincing life. Geary's exacting, historically accurate approach makes this—as well as his other nonfiction works—a natural for true-crime fans as well as comics lovers."  —Booklist

"Outstanding! A-"  —Onion

"A great series of books and this latest was fascinating. What I love about this book and in truth all of Geary's books in this series is his fair minded telling of the tale. While he may lead the reader towards a solution he leaves it to the reader to draw conclusions from the facts as we know them." —www.CrimeSpreeMag.com

"[Rick Geary] uses his detached style to get at something essential in the story he's telling, contrasting his placid portraiture with the roiling passions just under the surface." —www.AVClub.com

"Another gem, even though it's not as famous a crime as some others in the series. This double-murder of an adulterous couple set suburban New Brunswick, N.J., all atwitter with saucy speculation in 1922—and it has the same effect today." —Minneapolis Star Tribune (August 30, 2012)

"Geary's black-and-white art is precise without being clinical, and at times it approaches the cinematic, using dramatic angles and sharp juxtapositions to communicate the queasy mystery of this double homicide."  —Joe Sutliff Sanders, Teacher Librarian
