Overview

A vivid and intimate biography of the “March King”

This compelling life story of John Philip Sousa, as only his great-grandson and only living heir could tell it, tells of a man who, through talent, hard work, and sheer drive, lived among presidents, corporate giants, and movie stars, yet stayed true to his family. Less focused on the technical side of his famed music, this work details the composer’s life—who he was, why he was driven to success, the family man, the businessman, the marine—through hundreds of archival images and keepsakes from the author and family, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Marine Band archives. Also featured are short stories, news clippings, music covers, sheet music, and magazine ads from Sousa’s lifetime. A CD with the premier recordings of Sousa’s most adored music, performed by the President’s Own U.S. Marine Band, is also included in this homage to one of America’s most beloved composers.
