PMA/IPG Small Press Selection

The Small Press Selection was founded on the idea that booksellers would welcome the titles of very small and even start-up publishers if (and only if) these books met high standards for appearance and content, and if they could be handled efficiently and profitably.

This program has provided a successful and secure point of entry into the book trade for many small presses. Sales have been strong and returns very low. Some of these presses will become important players in our industry.

Now in its thirteenth season, the Small Press Selection program is a joint effort of PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association and Independent Publishers Group (IPG).

PMA is a not-for-profit, professional trade association of more than 3,000 independent publishers. Founded in 1983, PMA sponsors seminars, cooperative marketing programs, a newsletter, and numerous other services for its members. Membership in PMA entitles publishers to submit books for inclusion in the Small Press Selection.

All the books in this catalog, however, have also been carefully screened by a selection committee made up of representatives from the independent bookselling community, the major chains, and national book wholesalers. The physical appearance, price, and subject matter of each submitted title has been appraised by these book professionals, and only the ones that can truly compete in the trade were selected.

IPG's part in the Small Press Selection is to ensure that booksellers can deal with this list profitably and efficiently. The books in this catalog are presented by IPG reps, and they combine with the titles in the main IPG catalog for discount, billing, and shipping.
