Overview

Art history scholar Imma Julián discusses a wide range of topics with the great Spanish painter Antoni Tàpies in this collection of candid dialogues that takes readers into the artist’s mind. The conversations span the period from the mid-1970s to recent times and center on experiences and personal and shared memories from the dramatic postwar years to the arrival of democracy in Spain. What emerges is a portrait of a man who, despite having achieved international acclaim and success, was wholly dedicated to representing the humblest urban landscape, searching his surroundings and within himself for the elements necessary to communicate with his contemporaries through a unique and highly individualistic language. Included are Tapies’s musings on the ethical and political responsibilities of his job; the intellectual magnitude of a tireless worker; his admiration for other greats, such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro; his philias and phobias; and his contempt for trends.
