Overview

The Project was born when Professor Omer Bartov began to question his Israeli family on their European origins. The answers led him to a long exploration of places, archives, passages, books, monuments, and memories of the most brutal chapter in the history of the twentieth century. The genocide perpetrated by the Nazi's and their accomplices in Ukraine was not a methodical industrial activity, but rather an endless succession of almost intimately crafted killings. Some responsible even benefitted politically or economically. The echoes of what happened arrive today as small keys that help us understand the past and present. Not all was erased, and they search for attentive readers with a desire to listen.

Reviews

"The Jews of East Galicia were obliterated twice: physically by the Nazis, and in memory by the Soviets and in independent Ukraine. Omer Bartov's tour of what remains of a once-vital civilization shows how unwelcome Jews still are in the region, even if only as an artifact of a distant past."— David Engel, New York University, on the English-language translation

Author Biography
