Overview

This copiously annotated bibliography traces the history of the East India Company by examining the printed materials issued during its first 185 years, from the award of Elizabeth I's Charter to the passing of William Pitt's India Act. It is the first large-scale bibliography of the Company to be published, describing a huge range of printed items, from Parliamentary Acts to satirical poems. Included are the Company's own petitions for the regular renewal of its privileges, the complaints of disaffected employees, the raging polemics of 18th-century pamphleteers, and the rousing oratory of Edmund Burke, along with practical works on navigation, lists of proprietors, and much other fascinating material.
